São Paulo, Brazil
The Center of Excellence in Environmental Education (CEREA), located in Villa Lobos Park in São Paulo, was designed by architect Decio Tozzi in collaboration with Estúdio Arkiz. It was commissioned by the São Paulo State Secretary of Environment as an educational building to be used by several governmental institutions dedicated to different modalities of environmental education.
The open spaces around CEREA articulate a series of educational gardens illustrating different Brazilian ecosystems, gradually leading the visitor towards the interior of the building. A wide inner courtyard functions as a transitional space between inside and outside, and can also be used for temporary exhibitions. On its three floors, the building houses a Multimedia Library, an Environmental Cartography Library, research facilities, convention rooms, an auditorium for 250 spectators and a cafeteria.
