Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, Costa Rica
This project, developed in partnership with the office Hiperstudio, was developed for an international architectural competition for the construction of the regional headquarters of Fundación FUNDECOR. This entity is a non-governmental organization active in Costa Rica, whose function is to promote the sustainable management of natural resources of that country. One of the main missions of the foundation is to support and educate small farmers and gatherers, so they can draw their livelihood from Costa Rica’s rainforests without damaging the conservation of this delicate ecosystem.
Located in the village of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, in the densely forested region of Heredia, the building has offices and research facilities to support the actions of biologists, agronomists and other specialists devoted to the study of the forests of the region. It also contains temporary accommodation for foreign visitors, as well as a small auditorium for lectures and educational activities. The architectural design consists of three "pavilions" functionally specialized (research, accommodation and auditorium), connected by a covered walkway that curves gently in response to the curvature of the land, creating a "promenade architeturale" that offers beautiful views of the surrounding forest.
