Quartier is a new community development located in Pelotas, the third largest city in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
The project masterplan was developed by Jaime Lerner Arquitetos Associados, according to the concepts of New Urbanism, and prioritizes intelligent occupation and the quality of life of citizens. Urban mobility was carefully planned, integrating bike paths, clean public transport and exclusive pedestrian streets, in order to promote the concept of ‘walkability’, allowing residents can solve most of their demands within walking distance.
The project developed by ARKIZ for the Quartier Block 3 is a prototype for the future development of the neighborhood. The concept of this project is to offer great quality of life and comfort to the residents while also providing a seamless integration with the surrounding streets and promoting the spirit of community and neighborhood that is one of the hallmarks of the Quartier development.
Composed of four residential blocks with six floors each, arranged in parallel to the surrounding streets, the project conforms an inner court resembling the model of ‘manzana cerrada’ that is the typical urban unit of Barcelona and other European cities.
This model consists of lower buildings with a strong connection to the surrounding streets, strengthening the vitality of urban space while also leaving space for a generous internal square.
