This projectfor the State of Santa Catarina Public Library, developed in partnership with the office Hiperstudio, received the second prize in a national competition organized by the Institute of Architects of Brazil, of which more than 80 teams participated. The competition proposed the renewal of an old building in the city of Florianópolis, which had been shared between the library and other governmental offices for many years. These public offices were then relocated to another place, liberating the building to be exclusively used by the library; however, it wasn’t purpose-built for this end and needed to be adapted for this new function.
The project proposes the removal of parts of the original concrete slabs, linking all the floors through a great diagonal hall. In the basement, a new auditorium provides space for lectures and educational activities, while on the last floor a new media center opens up into a panoramic terrace. The new façade, composed of modular panels with varying degrees of transparency, allows the filtering of diffuse sunlight without sacrificing views towards the city.
